Random and member-selectable are two different things, and Korean listings often put both words into the same product title. A random listing (랜덤) means the seller sends whichever version or photocard it pulls from the pool, so you do not choose the member. A member-selectable listing (멤버선택, 버전 선택) gives you an option list, so you pick the cover or version yourself. The part most buyers miss: even a member-selectable cover usually comes with a random photocard inside. Read the option list and the product spec, not the promotional image.
- The option list is the deciding evidence. If you cannot pick a member there, the item is random no matter what the picture shows.
- "Random" can describe the whole product (a random album version) or an extra inside it (a random photocard, poster, or sticker).
- A member-selectable cover does not make the included photocard selectable. Specs often say one random card out of a set.
- Ordering several units does not guarantee different members unless the listing explicitly promises it.
How to Tell Which One You Are Looking At
The option list decides it
Open the product page and look for the option selector, not the photo gallery. If the selector lists member names or version names, you can choose. If it only asks for quantity, or offers one line that says random, you cannot.
Korean album retailers label this in the product title itself. One verified example: JUMP UPlists an album as "(Digipack Ver.) [디지팩7종 중 랜덤1종]" — one random of seven versions — and states in the product details that the version cannot be selected. The shop is telling you in advance that the choice is out of your hands.
The opposite pattern exists too. Lotte ONlists a BLACKPINK album as "DIGIPACK ver. 멤버선택 포토카드 랜덤증정" — a member-selectable version with a random photocard added. The cover is selectable; the card is not.
"Random" can describe the product or the extra
This is where most buyers misread a listing. Two separate things can be random:
- The product itself: you buy a digipack, and the shop sends one of several member versions.
- An item inside it: the version is fixed, but the photocard, folded poster, or sticker is drawn from a pool.
A single listing can be both at once. The Korean retailer Aladinsells an EVNNE digipack described as "(7종 중 랜덤발송)" — random dispatch among seven — and lists the contents as a photobook, a CD-R, and a selfie photocard of one random type.
Official notices are the strongest source
For pre-order benefits and event gifts, the shop's or agency's own notice is the most reliable text: it states the pool size and whether selection is possible. A verified example from Weverse: the fromis_9 signing event noticestates that each album includes one unreleased selfie photocard, provided at random — one of eight members per album. No member choice is offered anywhere in that notice.
When a notice names a pool of eight and says one is provided at random, that is your answer. A cropped screenshot from social media is not.
Buying Multiple Units Does Not Guarantee a Set
A common assumption is that buying several albums will cover all the members. Random does not work that way: each unit is drawn from the pool, so duplicates are possible unless the listing promises otherwise. Some group-order pages say they will "try" to avoid duplicates, and try is not a promise.
Watch the word "set" as well: in Korean listings it usually means all versions included in one purchase, not one photocard of every member. If a specific member matters, buy a member-selectable version when the listing offers one, or accept that the pull is random.
What to Write in Your Purchase Request
The request is where you can remove most of the ambiguity:
- Paste the product URL and copy the option text exactly as it appears, including the Korean. Do not replace "random version" with the member you are hoping for.
- State whether you accept a random version or only a specific member or version. If you want a particular member's photocard, say it is a preference, not a condition, because nobody can filter a random pull.
- Give the quantity, and say whether duplicates are acceptable.
- For pre-order benefits, say whether the benefit is required. Benefits have their own conditions and can change or end.
- If a substitute is acceptable, define it narrowly. "Any member" and "the version in my screenshot" are different instructions.
A practical note might read: "One album, member-selectable version: [member name]. If that version is unavailable, ask before substituting a random version. The included photocard may be random, and that is fine." Use wording like this only when it matches what you actually accept.
